Slovenian curriculum

44 lessons from A1 to B2. Each level is built on the level description of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), has a mock exam in the format of the official one, and every part of that exam is linked to the lessons that teach it.

The curriculum prepares you for the level and the exam. The official certificate is awarded by the body that runs the exam, not by the platform.

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where someone lives, people they know and things they have. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

  1. A1.1 The Slovenian Alphabet and Pronunciation

    Learn to read any Slovenian word aloud, hear the difference the little hooks on č, š and ž make, and spell your own name letter by letter at a desk or a reception counter.

  2. A1.2 Greetings and Introductions in the Workplace and Daily Life

    Greet people, introduce yourself, say where you are from, where you live and what you do — and learn when Slovenians expect the polite Vi rather than the familiar ti.

  3. A1.3 Present Tense and Pronouns

    Master the Slovenian present tense — all three conjugation groups, the negative, the irregular verbs and the reflexives — so you can describe your work, your studies and your day in full sentences.

  4. A1.4 To Be and To Have (Biti in Imeti) & Basic Descriptions

    Say what you have and what you do not have, describe people and things with adjectives that agree correctly, and talk about your family and how old everyone is.

  5. A1.5 Numbers, Time and Dates

    Numbers from zero to a thousand, telling and asking the time, days, months and dates, and handling prices and paying — the unit that makes a Slovenian timetable usable.

  6. A1.6 Family, Friends, and Hobbies

    Say what you like and what you like doing, talk about your wider family and your friends, and get the plural, the demonstratives and the connectors right.

  7. A1.7 Food and Drink at the Restaurant and Workplace

    Order food and drink in correct Slovenian, read a menu, ask what the kitchen recommends, ask for the bill, and do a supermarket and bakery run.

  8. A1.8 Daily Routine (Vsakdanja Rutina)

    Tell the story of your day from waking up to going to bed, handle reflexive verbs and frequency adverbs, and describe how you get to work.

  9. A1.9 Shopping and Services

    Say what you want to buy and what you need, ask about size, colour and price, and get things done at the post office, the pharmacy and the checkout.

  10. A1.10 Orientation and Transport

    Ask for directions and understand the answer, give directions to someone else, buy a bus or train ticket, and read the signs in a Slovenian station.

  11. A1.11 Comprehensive Review and Assessment (A1)

    The closing unit of level A1: a structured review of the five grammar pillars, a full vocabulary round-up, and sample exam tasks in reading, listening, speaking and writing.

Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

  1. A2.1 Past Tense (Pretekli čas)

    Learn to talk about what you did yesterday and what you have experienced: how Slovene builds the past tense, why it changes with the speaker's gender, how to negate it, and how to tell the story of a past trip.

  2. A2.2 Future Tense and Making Arrangements (Prihodnjik)

    Talk about your plans, fix a time to meet, and read a weather forecast: Slovene future tense, how to negate it, and the cases where a present tense is the correct way to say something future.

  3. A2.3 Cases — Basics (Nominative, Accusative, Genitive)

    Meet the system the whole Slovene language runs on: six grammatical cases, how a noun changes its ending according to its job in the sentence, and hands-on practice with the three cases you will use most.

  4. A2.4 Modal Verbs (Modalni glagoli)

    Say "I have to", "I can" and "may I?" in Slovene, make a polite request in a restaurant or an office, and read a sign that tells you something is forbidden, allowed or compulsory.

  5. A2.5 Prepositions and Location (Predlogi in Kraj)

    Say where you are, where you are going and where you came from; ask for directions on a Slovene street and understand the answer; describe your neighbourhood and your address.

  6. A2.6 Health and Well-being (Zdravje in Počutje)

    Describe how you feel at a doctor's surgery, name the part that hurts, buy what you need at a pharmacy, and call for emergency help.

  7. A2.7 Housing and Home (Stanovanje in Dom)

    Describe your home, its rooms and its furniture; decode a Slovene property advert; and hold a full conversation about finding, viewing and renting a flat.

  8. A2.8 Work and Professions (Delo in Poklic)

    Say what you do, where you work and what you work with; write a Slovene CV; read a job advert; and get through an interview.

  9. A2.9 Leisure and Hobbies

    Talk about your hobbies, your sport and what you do at the weekend; invite someone somewhere; and accept or decline an invitation gracefully.

  10. A2.10 A2 Comprehensive Review and Assessment

    Review the whole of A2 in one unit — three tenses, six cases, the dual, and nine vocabulary areas — then see exactly how the official Slovene language exam is structured.

  11. A2.11 Bank, Phone and Bills

Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

  1. B1.1 Advanced Cases: Dative, Locative, Instrumental

    Master the last three Slovenian cases — dative, locative and instrumental — and complete the six-case system that lets you build sentences with free word order and the right endings.

  2. B1.2 Conditional Mood and Wishes (Pogojnik in Želje)

    Learn one word — bi — that unlocks five different things at once: hypotheticals, wishes, polite requests, advice and apologies. It is the single highest-return item in the language.

  3. B1.3 Passive and Impersonal Constructions

    Read Slovenian news and official paperwork with confidence: both passive constructions and the impersonal forms that fill notices, regulations and signs.

  4. B1.4 Reported Speech

    Learn to report what other people said: statements with da, questions with a question word or ali, and instructions with naj — three connectors that let you tell a story about someone else.

  5. B1.5 Conjunctions and Complex Sentences
